Over the last two years in our region (Australasia) we have seen much excitement, funding, shouting and drum beating exhorting the merit of starting something, anything and everything. Reinvent, out with the old and in with the new. Thousands are gathering, sitting in old buildings, plugged into their technologies and being entrepreneurial, love it.
At last the terms of creativity, innovation (the act/art of making something) and entrepreneurship (combining creativity and innovation) have become part of virtual and actual conversations; it’s normal now.
The start-ups (tadpoles) are talking? Established organisations (frogs) have been doing it for ages or are they?
A new word is ecosystem (it still sounds to me like the frogs are sitting around a pond watching the tadpoles going crazy, hey who are you calling a frog?). To me, we are simply connecting what we have and for the first time, many can now see the pond. The opportunity is now for all to share the possibilities and deliver sustainable opportunities. Professor Michael Porter described a value chain many years ago. This is surely not being relabelled as an ecosystem?
Established organisations have always either dominated or owned value chains/systems. So whether it is a new business model, an app or indeed something really new (R&D) the ability for frogs to continue to employ, deliver powerful economic and social dividends, remains.
It’s much easier if you are already a frog.
So, for my friends and colleagues in established organisations, private, public, government and not for profit, the way to unleash the potential of those that work with and for you, are to use straightforward, evidence based steps that have measurable results. We are all born with a creative mindset, the tools of innovation are simple to learn and use and when these are combined you will see enterprising behaviour flourish.
I can hear many of you say “we are too busy”, “we are restructuring”, we are realigning our strategy to embrace change in today’s turbulent markets (who speaks like that?). When I hear this I am thinking, you are either unsure of unleashing the potential or simply you have not done this before.

2017 – exploring the opportunities not ideas. Ideas are everywhere I do hope you can you see them. Enterprising behaviour is all about converting the idea to the opportunity and delivering it. Sounds like something you have been doing for ages. If you can do this then of course you will be happy. Happiness is a positive cash flow.
